Jonathan Kuminga has shown flashes of greatness during his rookie season with the Warriors, but the 19-year-old also is prone to getting into foul trouble.
That’s the life of a teenager in the NBA. Veteran players are going to take advantage of you and referees aren’t going to give you the benefit of the doubt.
But late in the Warriors’ 100-94 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night in Texas, Kuminga was whistled for his fifth foul while defending Joshua Primo. It was a questionable call. Coach Steve Kerr already used his coach’s challenge in the first half, so Golden State had to live with the call on the floor.
At the time of the foul, the Warriors had a 96-93 lead and Primo missed the shot. Instead of a solid defensive stop with a three-point lead, Golden State watched Primo make one of two free throws, cutting their lead to two.

A day later, the NBA has ruled the referees incorrectly called the foul on Kuminga.
“Kuminga (GSW) is established in front of Primo (SAS) when marginal body contact occurs on the shot attempt,” the NBA wrote in the daily Last Two Minute Report.
Less than a minute later, Kuminga was the victim of another missed call by the refs. With 1:13 left in regulation, the rookie cut the basket and took a pass from Draymond Green. Kuminga went up and was met at the rim by Spurs big man Zach Collins.
On the floor, the refs ruled that Collins kept his verticality and didn’t foul Kuminga as he blocked the shot. But upon review, the NBA said that Collins should have been whistled for a foul.
“Collins (SAS) brings his right arm down from a vertical position and makes contact with Kuminga’s (GSW) wrist, which affects his play at the basket,” the NBA wrote.
The good news for the Warriors is that the incorrect calls didn’t cost them as they were able to keep the Spurs off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
The Warriors’ win over the Spurs was crucial as they try to lock up the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Golden State currently holds a one-game lead over the Dallas Mavericks entering their respective season finales Sunday night.
If the Warriors beat the New Orleans Pelicans or the Mavericks lose to the San Antonio Spurs, Golden State will secure the higher seed.
But Dallas holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Warriors, so if Golden State loses and the Mavericks win, the latter would become the No. 3 seed.
