‘That is naughty from Felipe’: Chris Sutton blasts the Atletico Madrid player for ‘nasty’ challenge on Manchester City’s Phil Foden as he questions why the player wasn’t taken off for a ‘proper’ concussion check

  • Manchester City were bemused by the referee’s decision not to book Felipe

Chris Sutton has criticised Felipe for a ‘nasty’ challenge on Phil Foden in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final between Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.

Foden received a nasty blow to the head from the Atleti player Felipe as he jumped for a header in first half of the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid.

Chris Sutton, co-commentating for 5Live, was bemused the Brazilian international escaped without a booking for the challenge.

He said: ‘That is naughty from Felipe. Foden was always going to win the ball, it is a really nasty one.

‘It should have been a yellow, it was a really poor challenge. I hope Phil Foden is okay.’

Not reserving his criticism for Felipe, the former Celtic man poured scorn on the idea City had carried out a proper concussion check on Foden following the challenge.

Sutton has long been campaigning for better concussion checks in football as well as better awareness of the impact dementia is having on older, former professionals.

He labelled Michael Owen a ‘caveman’ after a heated discussion in February regarding checks in football.

‘You can’t tell me this is significant enough concussion check for Phil Foden. You can’t take any chances. If in doubt, sit him out. I just saw Pep ask him “are you okay?”.

‘What is he going to say? He should have been taken off and checked properly in the sanctuary of the changing room.’

Meanwhile, supporters on Twitter also questioned referee Daniel Siebert’s decision to not caution Felipe.

One asked: ‘How on earth is that not a booking for that foul of Phil Foden?’

Another said: ‘Awful challenge on Foden, clear yellow card overlooked. Typical.’

Manchester City travelled to Madrid leading 1-0 on aggregate following Kevin De Bruyne’s goal last week. One of the clubs will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals, who beat Chelsea in a European epic at the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.
